How We Began
In the Spring of 1965, Christian families living south of Dayton realized the need for a congregation of the Lord's church in this area. Because of that need, the Centerville Church of Christ was established.
Plans were taken to the elders of the Belmont Church of Christ for review. The Belmont elders gave Centerville their warmest blessings.
On May 2, 1965, Centerville Church of Christ met at the Magsig School Building on West Franklin St. in Centerville. The congregation met there on Sunday mornings and evenings until March 1966, when a property at 205 South Main St. was purchased. Mid-week Bible study was held at the Washington Township Hall on North Main on Thursdays. Friday night fellowships were also held at the hall. Other classes and meetings were held in individual homes.
The property on South Main had been built as a model home. The membership converted the garage and storge area into an auditorium along with small classrooms and bathrooms. The house section was "Home" to our evangelists' families, but also used Sundays and Wednesdays as classrooms and Sunday mornings for youth worship. During this period, lots of "thin walls" ( bed sheets) were used.
In the late 1960's land was purchased at 1411 West Spring Valley Road, our present location. At the time of purchase, the area was just a pasture field on a little-used road. Over the years, the mall area, shops, restaurants, and multiple businesses along I-75 and I-675 have caused that to change tremendously. In mid 1974, plans began for a building on the Spring Valley property. The congregation designed and constructed the building almost entirely. The first Sunday in the new building was April 13, 1975. The building has gone through several renovations and redecorating through the years. In the late 1990's, the township rerouted Spring Valley Road in front of our building and created a cul-de-sac as our entrance. Our address at that time was changed to what is now, 1411 Old Spring Valley Ct.
Centerville has been fortunate to have employed many godly men as ministers and youth ministers since the beginning of our story. They have taught from the Word, encouraged, motivated, and comforted.
Over the years, God blessed the Centerville congregation with tremendous growth, which caused the need for additional space for classes, activities, and fellowship. In 2003, the Family Life Center, a multi-purpose facility, was built. The building has been used for everything from potluck suppers to hosting community events. Sadly, in April of 2025, the FLC burned due to an electrical fire. Thankfully, the building was empty and no one was hurt. Currently, the restoration and rebuild is expected to be complete Fall of 2026.
Ten families did the initial planning for this congregation. To date Centerville Church of Christ consists of over 120 families. The original 10 families who established the congregation in the Lord's name in 1965 had a vision of a family of God's people doing great things to His glory! We carry on this vision....
